Andrew Johnson, a Black wrestler at Buena Regional Excessive Faculty in New Jersey, was instructed by Alan Maloney, a White referee, to lower his dreadlocks or forfeit a match.
The incident was caught on video and uploaded to Twitter by Mike Frankel, the sports activities director of SNJ As we speak Information.
“A referee wouldn’t enable Andrew Johnson of Buena @brhschiefs to wrestle with a canopy over his dreadlocks.”
Frankel tweeted, “It was both an impromptu haircut, or forfeit. Johnson selected the haircut, then received by sudden victory in OT to assist spark Buena to a win.”
Within the clip, Johnson may be seen reluctantly having his dreads lower off whereas being supported by a variety of his teammates.
There was a rise within the consciousness of how Black folks expertise racism over the presence of their pure hair. In August, a father turned emotional after his 6-year-old son was denied entry right into a Florida faculty due to his dreads.
