Reports have emerged stating that the convoy of Murtala Ajaka, the governorship candidate representing the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Kogi State, was targeted by gunmen in an ambush.
According to sources, the campaign convoy fell victim to the ambush while returning from Ogori Magongo, where Ajaka had conducted consultations with relevant stakeholders in the area.
During the incident, a prolonged exchange of fire between the attackers and security operatives attached to Ajaka resulted in the apprehension of one of the gunmen. The engagement lasted nearly half an hour.
It was noted that the assailants abandoned two of their operational vehicles and managed to flee through the nearby bush.
The apprehended attacker has since been transferred to the Idah Divisional Police Headquarters for further investigation.
Ajaka is presently vying for the esteemed position of Governor of Kogi State in the upcoming gubernatorial election scheduled for November 11, 2023.
Noteworthy contenders in the race for the governorship seat in Kogi include Ahmed Usman Ododo of the All Progressive Congress (APC) and Senator Dino Melaye representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
