In Benin City, at an Edo State High Court, Raymond Imozemhe, a 22-year-old internet fraudster, was apprehended and presented before Judge Efe Ikponwonba. The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission accused him and six others of fraud (EFCC).
Imozemhe, a Benin City-based fraudster, pretended to be Hollywood actor Tom Cruise while playing the Scrabble game in order to deceive online users.
The EFCC charged him with fraudulent impersonation and possession of fraudulent documents, both of which were punishable under Section 384(1) of the Criminal Law of Edo State Law, 2022.
Having pleaded guilty to the charges, Imozemhe was sentenced to three years in prison, with the option of paying a ₦200,000 fine.
Various sentences were also given to the other co-accused: Christian Okafor and Jimmy Emmanuel received the same punishment as Imozemhe, Oritseweyinmi Allen Poto was given a three-year prison term with the possibility of a $30,000 fine, and David Oghneyerivwo Ighere was given a two-year prison term with the possibility of a $200,000 fine.
Both Christopher Godfirst and Osapamwan Destiny Gaius were given the option of three years in prison or a fine of 100,000 apiece. The judge further mandated that each offender write a written promise to behave properly after serving their sentences.
