Gunmen believed to be herdsmen carried out a violent assault on a Benue Links bus that was transporting passengers to Otukpo via the Naka road in Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State. The incident occurred at Tyolaha village on Thursday, October 12, 2023.
The heavily armed assailants attacked the vehicle, resulting in the tragic death of one passenger. SP Catherine Anene, the spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, confirmed the incident on Friday, stating that three individuals, including women, sustained injuries and one person lost their life.
Hon. Gyila Solomon Terlumun, the State Assembly Member for Gwer West, expressed his condemnation of the ruthless attack in a statement issued by his Senior Legislative Aide/Media Aide, Akem Peter. According to the statement, three individuals were killed in the assault, and numerous others remain unaccounted for.
“The honorable member extends his heartfelt condolences to the victims’ families and shares in their grief, particularly as the attack took place within his constituency, which he represents at the State Assembly,” the statement reads.
Furthermore, he urges the state government to establish a permanent security checkpoint at Tyolaha village, where it is reported that armed Fulani herdsmen have been consistently launching attacks, almost on a daily basis. May the souls of the victims rest in peace. Amen.
