The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, has officially confirmed the tragic loss of two lives in an altercation involving a Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) official and a driver in the Ago Palace area of Lagos.
According to reports, the incident took place on Tuesday morning when the driver of a Toyota Sienna allegedly attempted to evade capture after violating traffic regulations.
Eyewitnesses stated that the LASTMA official engaged in a struggle with the driver, desperately attempting to bring him to justice for his traffic offense at Okota Roundabout.
Tragically, the driver lost control of the vehicle, resulting in a collision with a tricycle. As a consequence, the tricycle driver lost his life, and the passengers sustained injuries.
Confirming the events, the Police spokesperson stated, “Regrettably, two individuals have been confirmed dead, and two children are currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital.”
Furthermore, he provided insight into the incident, stating, “This unfortunate occurrence unfolded when a driver, attempting to escape from LASTMA officials who had accosted him for driving against traffic, collided with a tricycle.”
The spokesperson also revealed that “the policeman assigned to the LASTMA team was severely assaulted and suffered grave injuries from an enraged mob. He is currently unconscious and receiving medical attention.”
Promptly responding to the incident, backup Police teams were dispatched to the location, successfully restoring normalcy in the area.
