IVD was arraigned on Monday, March 20, for the alleged manslaughter of his late wife Abimbola, who died in a fire incident at their residence in the state’s Lekki area in October 2022.
IVD pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him.
Ikechukwu Ogbonna, popularly known as IVD, was arraigned before Justice Nicole-Clay of a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja on Monday, March 20, for the alleged manslaughter of his late wife Abimbola, who died in a fire incident at their residence in the state’s Lekki area in October 2022.
In suit No. LD/21055C/23, the Lagos state government charged IVD with one count of involuntary manslaughter. On Monday, March 20, the prosecuting counsel, Adeshola Bello, told the court that there was a mistake in the date the alleged offence was committed.
“We have October 10 on file, but the date was October 12,” Bello explained.
The court complied with the prosecution’s request for permission to amend, according to the prosecution’s attorney. Section 229 of the Lagos State Criminal Code of 2015 was broken, he claimed, according to testimony he gave to the court.
As the accusations were read to IVD, he entered a plea of not guilty. The defendant’s attorney, Victor Ogunde, SAN, asked for bail on his behalf. Even though the defendant has been out on bond since March 1, the judge questioned why he was filing a bail application for him. The defense lawyer retorted that the charge number for his client’s case was different.
Justice Nicole-Clay subsequently changed the case’s commencement date to March 30, May 24, and May 25, 2023.
