The Kano State House of Assembly has granted approval to Governor Abba Kabir-Yusuf’s request to secure a loan of N4 billion from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for the purpose of completing the Tiga and Challawa Hydro-electric power project. The decision was made following the adoption of a motion put forth by Lawan Hussaini (NNPP- Dala), the House’s leader, during their plenary session.
In presenting the motion, Mr. Hussaini emphasized that the loan carries a single-digit interest rate, making it a financially viable option for the state. He further mentioned that the completion of the project will contribute to the revitalization of struggling industries within the state.
The Tiga Independent Power Plant project was initially initiated during the tenure of former Governor Rabi’u Kwankwaso, with the objective of generating 35MW of power using the Challawa and Tiga dams. Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, who assumed office in 2015, has continued to prioritize the project.
In a letter addressed to the House, Governor Kabir-Yusuf requested their approval for the loan, highlighting that the funds will be allocated towards finalizing the project. The project aims to stimulate the state’s economy by rejuvenating industries, supporting irrigation farming, and facilitating the installment of street lights across the city.
