Lagos State government recently took action by demolishing an uncompleted building in Banana Island due to a lack of proper authorization and documentation. The decision to demolish the structure came after Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu personally visited the site and directed the owner to halt further development.
In a statement during the demolition, Oluyinka Olumide, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, reiterated the government’s commitment to taking legal action against individuals who reclaim lands and erect structures without proper authorization and documentation.
Olumide expressed concern over the deliberate disregard for the law, stating, “There is law and everybody is supposed to adhere to the law. The law is supposed to guide society. Here, lawless activities are taking place whereby people are on their own, deliberately reclaiming land for the purpose of their own development, which is very bad.”
He further highlighted the dangerous nature of the reclaimed land, with the filling almost reaching the power line and jeopardizing human safety. Olumide emphasized that the government will not tolerate such violations and that the waterway must be preserved for free flow.
The commissioner stressed that land reclamation is an exclusive right of the government and should not be pursued by individuals. He emphasized the need for thorough studies and the involvement of the relevant ministries before any reclamation activities take place.
Gbolahan Oki, the General Manager of the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA), led the demolition team and expressed regret that the developers continued to build despite the governor’s order. Oki emphasized that strict adherence to planning rules and regulations is necessary, regardless of status or location.
Oki explained that individuals must possess necessary documents such as a certificate of occupancy and building plan approval before commencing any construction. Additionally, the lawyer responsible for the land should ensure the validity of all documentation.
The actions taken by the Lagos State government in demolishing the structure in Banana Island serve as a reminder to property owners and developers that proper authorization and documentation are essential. The government’s commitment to upholding property laws and regulations ensures the safety and orderly development of the state.
