The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), FCT Command, has apprehended 15 individuals suspected of telecommunications cable theft, vandalism of critical infrastructure, and other related offenses.
The arrest was made as part of the command’s ongoing efforts to sanitize the capital city, according to a statement by the command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), ASC1 Comfort Okomanyi. The NSCDC FCT Commandant, Olusola Odumosu, reiterated the importance of the arrest, emphasizing the need to protect the country’s capital.
The suspects were apprehended during routine night operations in various parts of the FCT. Offenses included vandalism of public property, stealing, and bag and phone snatching under the guise of scavenging. Recovered items from the suspects included iron rods, a Lexus ES 330 vehicle used for transportation, vandalized transmission cables, and various tools. Odumosu emphasized the significance of prosecuting the suspects to serve as a deterrent.
He condemned the criminal activity of damaging critical assets and public utilities, which poses risks to public safety. The NSCDC is committed to enforcing the ban on scavenging activities within the city center where vital infrastructure is located. Odumosu assured that the command will take robust measures to address this issue in the FCT. The NSCDC Commandant expressed gratitude to the public for their support and urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities around critical installations for prompt action by the Corps
