The Federal Ministry of Transportation is urging Nigerians to embrace bicycles as a viable alternative mode of transportation.
During a one-day stakeholders sensitization meeting held in Abuja, the Director of Road Transport and Mass Transit Administration, Musa Ibrahim, emphasized the significance of cycling in Nigeria. He pointed out that promoting bicycle commuting can contribute to reducing road accidents.
The stakeholders meeting coincided with the annual World Bicycle Day, observed on June 3 as per a United Nations General Assembly resolution. The day acknowledges the bicycle’s simplicity, affordability, reliability, cleanliness, and eco-friendly nature as a sustainable means of transport, fostering environmental responsibility and better health. The 2023 World Bicycle Day theme, “Riding Together for a Sustainable Future,” underscores the importance of collective efforts towards a greener future.
Furthermore, the Director highlighted that advocates have also endorsed bicycles as a tool for eradicating poverty, supporting sustainable development, enhancing education (including physical education for children and young people), promoting better health, preventing diseases, and fostering social inclusion.
