Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has spoken about his belief regarding which Christian leader in Nigeria he is confident will go to heaven.
Obasanjo stated that the only Nigerian Christian leader he is certain will attain heaven is the late Prelate Emeritus of the Methodist Church of Nigeria, Dr. Sunday Mbang, CON.
This declaration was made by Obasanjo during the funeral service of the late Prelate in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on August 11. Obasanjo held the position of Special Guest of Honour at the event.
Obasanjo praised the late Prelate’s straightforwardness and lack of emotional biases. He revealed that following his release from prison, when he was under pressure to become the President of Nigeria again, he consulted with various prominent Nigerians throughout the country. Among them, he frequently sought the advice of the late Prelate Emeritus Mbang, and greatly benefited from his counsel.

Obasanjo continued by highlighting that he consistently sought the late Prelate Emeritus’s guidance due to his honesty. He further mentioned that during Governor Emmanuel Udom’s tenure in Akwa Ibom State, whenever he needed to discuss important matters, he would ostensibly visit the state to see the governor, but in reality, his purpose was to meet with the late Prelate Emeritus.
Dr. Sunday Mbang, who once held the presidency of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and was the first black President of the World Methodist Council, passed away in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State on May 16, 2023, at the age of 86.
