A new regulation has been implemented, preventing first-time senators from participating in the elections for the positions of Senate President and Deputy. The proposal to amend the Senate’s “Standing Order” was presented by Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central) and received significant support from the senators, as confirmed by a voice vote conducted by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.
As a result of the amendment, which was adopted on Tuesday, October 3, individuals aspiring to the roles of Senate President and Deputy Senate must have completed at least one term in the Senate.
This revision follows Akpabio’s victory over first-time senator Abdulaziz Yari for the esteemed position of Senate President.
