Award-winning Nigerian singer, Divine Ikubor, widely known as Rema, recently shared insights into his music career, emphasizing that his pursuit is not solely driven by financial gains.
In an interview with renowned YouTuber Korty EO, the talented artist, famous for his hit songs like ‘Calm Down,’ revealed that money is not his sole motivation for creating music. He expressed that even if he were not a musician, he would still be actively seeking ways to earn a livelihood through dedicated efforts.
Rema, who is only 21 years old, also highlighted that during his early days of sharing freestyle videos online, which eventually led to the discovery by his record label Mavin Records, he was not driven by financial needs since he was already financially secure.
In his own words, Rema stated, “If music didn’t work, I would still be hustling and finding ways to earn a living. Even when I started doing freestyles, it wasn’t solely because I needed money. I was already financially stable. I was genuinely passionate about the craft.”
In addition, Rema disclosed the four influential artists who inspire him greatly. Among them, the late afrobeat pioneer Fela Anikulapo-Kuti and American rapper Kanye West were mentioned. Rema also drew inspiration from Nigerian Afrobeats Grammy winners Wizkid and Burna Boy.
During an interview with Hip TV, the talented musician explained that Kanye West’s unparalleled creativity, Wizkid’s charismatic lifestyle, and Burna Boy’s captivating life story have significantly influenced his artistic journey.
“I find inspiration in Burna because of his remarkable story. Fela inspires me greatly. Kanye West motivates me with his boundless creativity and production skills. Wizkid, on the other hand, captivates me with his unique persona,” Rema expressed passionately.
It is evident that Rema’s music career is driven by a deep-rooted passion and the desire to create impactful music, rather than mere financial gains. His influences, ranging from legendary pioneers to contemporary icons, reflect his commitment to artistic excellence and innovation.
