The Commander of Narcotics (CN) FCT, Kabir Tsakuwa, recently discussed the positive outcomes achieved in the fight against illegal drugs and trafficking in Nigeria. In an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Tsakuwa highlighted the significant efforts made by the Federal Government across all branches to ensure the eradication of illicit drug abuse and trafficking. The commander revealed that the Regional Academy for Drug Control in Jos is presently training approximately 2,500 cadets, while another 2,500 cadets have completed training as Narcotic Agents and Narcotic Assistants at the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) College in Katsina. These initiatives are aimed at strengthening the manpower of the agency to combat the challenges facing the territory.
Tsakuwa also emphasized the recent meeting hosted by the agency, with the full support of the Federal Government, which brought together the Heads of National Drug Law Enforcement Agencies, Africa (HONLAF). The President, Bola Tinubu, further assured the NDLEA and the international community of his commitment to the fight against substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking, including the provision of necessary resources. The proposed amendment of the Agency Act, currently in its final stage at the National Assembly, will further enhance the country’s efforts in combating substance abuse and illicit drug trafficking by introducing stricter punitive measures for drug offenses.
Furthermore, Tsakuwa expressed gratitude for the unwavering support received from the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), which has facilitated the agency in its mission to eliminate drug peddlers from the territory and identified black spots. The NDLEA FCT Command remains committed to working closely with the FCT Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, in order to eradicate drug abuse and illicit trade in the FCT and its surroundings. Tsakuwa also highlighted the strong relationship between the command and the judiciary, as timely attention to the agency’s cases by the Judges has contributed to the commendable level of convictions achieved. This collaboration will continue to be leveraged in order to make further arrests and seizures for the overall safety of the Federal Capital.
