Manchester City and Manchester United both suffered unexpected defeats in the Premier League over the weekend. Wolves shocked City with a 2-1 victory, while Crystal Palace handed United a 1-0 loss at home.
City had enjoyed a perfect start to their title defense, winning their first six games. They were aiming to become the first team to win four consecutive English top-flight titles. However, Wolves, who had only accumulated four points from their first six matches, caused an upset at Molineux.
Although Ruben Dias’ own goal initially gave Wolves the lead, City responded in the second half with Julian Alvarez’s free-kick. However, Wolves remained a constant threat on the counter-attack and secured the win with Hwang Hee-Chan’s goal 25 minutes from time.
City’s defeat means Liverpool could claim the top spot if they defeat Tottenham in their upcoming match.
On the other hand, United’s loss to Crystal Palace marked their fourth defeat in their first seven league games of the season. The pressure on their manager, Erik ten Hag, continues to mount. Joachim Andersen’s outstanding first-half volley was the only goal of the match at Old Trafford.
United had previously defeated Palace 3-0 in a League Cup meeting during the week. However, with Palace back at full strength, United struggled to create scoring opportunities and slipped to 10th place in the table.
In other Premier League matches, Arsenal moved up to second place with a convincing 4-0 victory over Bournemouth. Newcastle continued their recovery with a 2-0 win against Burnley, and Aston Villa thrashed Brighton 6-1, with Ollie Watkins scoring a hat-trick.
Luton secured their first-ever Premier League win with a 2-1 triumph over Everton, while Sheffield United remains at the bottom of the table after a 2-0 defeat to West Ham.
