Around fifteen individuals are feared to have lost their lives in a tragic incident when a local boat, transporting residents, including children, capsized in Njuwa Lake near Rugange village within the Yola South local government area of Adamawa State on September 8.
According to reports, the boat was ferrying the passengers on their way to their usual local activities in the main Yola town when it encountered a strong windstorm that led to water entering the boat, causing it to capsize instantly.
The local boat had approximately twenty passengers on board, but only six were able to be rescued, thanks to the efforts of local divers and a larger boat that arrived at the scene.
The spokesperson for the state police command, SP Suleiman Nguroje, confirmed the incident, stating that rescue operations are ongoing to locate and rescue the capsized canoe and its occupants.
